Small-batch New Zealand red blend wine

Have you ever tried a red wine made from 13 different grape varieties? Are you open-minded enough to give it a go? I think you must be. To come shopping on a site like this, you’re obviously looking for something a bit different.

Untitled Red Blend is a bold, generous New Zealand red blend inspired by the great wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the red blend movement currently taking the USA by storm. This is a wine lover’s wine — made for those times when all you want is a really good glass of red.

Potentially a New Zealand first, this blend brings together 10 red grape varieties and 3 white grape varieties from various regions and vintages. It is not trying to fit neatly into one traditional wine category. It is a proper mongrel blend, made by taste rather than by rulebook.

On one hand, it’s like Joseph Parker — it just loves pies and juicy burgers. But on the other, it’s not that well-padded or heavy. In that sense, it is more like Dan Carter: well defined, suave, appealing to both men and women, and very, very precise.

What does Untitled Red Blend taste like?

This is a full-coloured, mouthfilling and supple red blend with ripe, plummy fruit, spice, texture and excellent depth of flavour. It is serious enough for wine lovers, but still highly approachable and delicious to drink now.

Review

4.5 stars – Michael Cooper

From Untitled, a small, innovative producer based at Henderson, in West Auckland, the wine on the market in late 2021 is a unique combination of 13 varieties — 10 red and 3 white — from various regions and vintages. Fragrant, full-coloured, mouthfilling and supple, it has ripe, plummy, spicy flavours showing excellent depth and complexity. A serious but highly approachable wine, it is currently delicious, but should also reward cellaring.

Food match

Untitled Red Blend is made for hearty, satisfying food. Try it with pies, juicy burgers, roast lamb, steak, barbecued meats, mushroom dishes or slow-cooked winter comfort food.
